What causes notification issues?

  • Cached data that is bad or corrupted
  • Browser preferences or settings
  • Windows or Mac system settings (such as Do Not Disturb or Focus Assist)
  • Mobile devices or apps that interfere with notification delivery

Ever had a notification badge but no new activity to see? This is usually related to some bad cached data.

Step 1: Mark everything as read

  1. From the desktop app, open the affected workspace.
  2. Press ShiftEsc.

Check your Mac OS notification preferences

  1. Open your computer's System Preferences, then click Notifications.
  2. Select Slack from the list.
  3. Set the Slack alert style to either Banners or Alerts.

Note: If your device is running macOS 10.15, make sure to toggle on Allow Notifications from Slack before the last step.

Check your Mac OS Do Not Disturb settings

  1. Click the three horizontal lines icon in the upper-right corner of your screen to open the Notification Center for Mac.
  2. Locate Do Not Disturb and make sure it’s toggled Off.

Check your settings for Notifications & Actions

  1. On Windows 10, click the Start menu.
  2. Select Settings, then System.
  3. From the right sidebar, choose Notifications & Actions.
  4. LocateSlack in the list and check if notifications are enabled.

Check your Focus Assist settings

  1. On Windows 10, click the Start menu.
  2. Select Settings, then System.
  3. From the right sidebar, choose Focus Assist.
  4. Select Off to disable the feature. This will allow you to receive notifications.

Note: If notification sounds stop working on Windows 10, check the setting for Windows Quiet Hours. If active, notification sounds for apps are suppressed.

Enable visual effects on Windows Classic Theme

Using the Windows Classic Theme on Windows 7? Slack needs certain visual effects enabled in order to send you notifications. Here’s how to turn them on:
  1. Open the Start Menu.
  2. In the Search bar, type Transparency.
  3. Select Find and fix problems with transparency and other visual effects.
  4. Run the wizard to automatically turn on visual effects.

Remember: You’ll only get notifications for workspaces that you have open in your browser.

Chrome

  1. From the menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click Advanced at the bottom of the page.
  3. Under Privacy and security, click Site Settings, then select Notifications.
  4. Make sure Ask before sending (recommended) is turned on.

Firefox

  1. From the menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click Privacy & Security, then Settings (across from Notifications).
  3. Make sure your Slack workspace is included in the Notifications Permissions list.

Safari

  1. From the menu, click Preferences.
  2. Under the Websites tab, select Notifications.
  3. Make sure your Slack workspace is allowed to send notifications.

Step 2: Check your audio output settings

  1. On your desktop, open your System Preferences.
  2. Click on Sound, then select Sound Effects.
  3. Make sure the Alert Volume is turned up.
  4. Check what option is selected for Play sound effects through.


Step 3: Send a test notification

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. Under Sound & appearance, click Show an example.

Note: External monitors can cause issues with notification sounds. Try disconnecting your monitor and see if the problem persists.

Notifications in OS X can be a bit complicated, and the User Interface might have been better. Basically, there are notifications themselves as well as the OS X Notification Center where they are listed. This how-to shows the basics of managing both.

The place to start with managing OS X notifications is System Preferences > Notifications. It will look something like this.

The first thing to notice is that there is a distinction between a notification itself, call it an event if you will, and an app's participation in the Notification Center where notifications are listed.

The Notification Center is displayed by clicking its icon at the extreme right of the menu bar.

In OS X Mavericks, the entire display slides to the left. (In OS X Yosemite, it will simply overlay.) Notification Center looks like this:

The Contents of Notification Center, when displayed, is dictated by the sections in the preferences (Fig 1.) called 'In Notification Center' (INC) and 'Not in Notification Center (NINC)

1. Moving an app in/out of Notification Center. In the list on the left side of Notification Preferences (Fig 1.), drag an app from INC to the section below, NINC.

This manages the contents of Notification Center (Fig 3), but does not dictate whether individual notifications will appear as banners or alerts at the top right of your display when they're generated.

I experienced a problem dragging an app from INC to NINC when NINC is initially empty. It may be a bug or some other issue. I solved it by seeding the NINC with the checkbox 'Show in Notification Center' to the right of the app selected. See Fig 4 below. After that, I had no trouble dragging an app from INC to NINC.

2. Manage individual notifications. After you set the INC and NINC lists, you can configure individual notifications. Select one, and you'll see something like Fig 4 above. Different apps may have a slightly different set of checkboxes depending on how they operate. If you don't want individual app notifications to pop up in the display at all, change the alert style to 'None'.

3. Suppress All Notifications. If you scroll to the top of the INC list, you'll see a lunar icon with the label 'Do Not Disturb.' This was added in Mavericks, and allows you to set a time window during which all notifications will be blocked from appearing on your display. See Fig. 1. For example, I have notifications blocked during the day when I'm writing or podcasting but the block ends in late afternoon when I tend to do housekeeping on my Mac.

Once you distinguish between notifications appearing in the Notification Center and the control of how individual app notifications are announced, things get a lot more understandable.
