Are you unable to edit your photos or videos on your iPhone or iPad? It appears that some users run into problems using the built-in Photos app. It further seems that the option to edit photos or videos is grayed out when attempting to use the Photos app to adjust photos or videos.

If you didn't set up an iCloud Mail account when you set up iCloud, the Mail option in your iCloud for Windows account might be grayed out. Apps on my child's device are greyed out and won't install. However, if Find My iPhone is greyed out preventing you from toggling it back on, this is an Apple-related issue. If you are logged into iCloud/Apple ID, try to sign out of Apple ID and sign back in.
By grayed out, I mean that the edit button is disabled and cannot be selected (see the image below). Thus it is impossible to edit the selected photo or video.

There are several editing options that allow you to edit the size, angle, light, and more. Of course, you can use these editing tools only if the edit button is working.

Grayed-out edit button fix
Please first, answer these questions: Are the photos you take with the built-in Camera app on your iPhone not behaving as expected? Or does this issue affect all of your photos and happen randomly? If your answer is yes, then please see number 2 below.
Or you are having this problem only with your imported photos? If your answer is yes, then see number 1 below.
1. Are you having this problem with the photos or videos that were transferred from your computer or that were downloaded from an external source? It is likely that some of your important photos may have these inactive edit buttons, but not all. And this is probably because of compatibility issues.
This means that some of the photos or videos you have are not fully supported by the Photos app on the iPhone or iPad.
There are a lot of video and photo formats. The most common image types are TIFF, JPEG, PNG, GIF, and RAW. And the most common video formats are MP4, MOV, AVI, and FLV.
There are certain types of photo and video extensions that cannot be edited with the Photos app. For example, if your photos are in GIF formats, your edit button will be grayed out. What you can do is to convert the images or videos if possible. For example, since GIF images are not editable, you may want to convert them to JPG or PNG. You can use a third-party app to do so. Simply go to the App Store and download an image converter image. Or you can import the photo to your Mac and then you can convert with Preview or you can use QuickTime Player if it is a video. Here is how:
- Preview: File > Export, then choose a format such as JPEG or PNG.
- QuickTime Player: File > Export As, then save to H.264.
2. Are you having this issue with the photos you take with the Camera app on your iPhone? Please try these steps below in order until you have fixed your problem.
- Update your iPhone or iPad. Go to Settings > General and Software Update. If there is an update available, tap Download and Install and then follow the onscreen instructions.
- Restart your iPhone or iPad.
- Make sure that Use Cellular Data is on for Photos and Camera. Go to Settings and tap Cellular or tap Mobile Data, then turn on Photos and Camera.
- Change the default Camera setting to see this helps. This will change the capturing HEIF and HEVC format to JPG format.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Camera.
- Tap Formats.
- Tap Most Compatible. This will set the default photo format to JPG.
- Reset Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Please note that resetting your network settings will erase your network settings such as your saved Wi-Fi passwords, VPN settings, etc.
A workaround
This is not a fix but a workaround. You can follow the steps below so that you can edit your photos again. Here is how:
- Open the photo or video that you cannot edit.
- Then tap the share icon.
- Select Mail. And email it to your self. I sent it to my Gmail account.
- Then go to your Gmail account and open the email and save the file to your photos.
- Then open the photo or video in Photos and try to edit now.
If the steps above do not work, try this, this is a little bit different:
- Open Mail on your iPhone or iPad.
- Compose a new mail message. I used my iCloud account.
- Tap and hold in the text area and select Insert Photo or Video.
- Select the photo that you are unable to edit.
- And then send it to yourself.
- Now refresh Mail.
- Open this new mail. And save the image.
Now open the Photos app to see if you can now edit.

Did you notice that iOS greyed out your Apple ID settings? This means that when you open the Settings app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, your Apple ID shows up as greyed out, making it inaccessible. And when the Apple ID is tapped, nothing happens because the setting is untappable. Sometimes A greyed out Apple ID may appear to be stuck on ‘Verifying’.
If you are also having this problem, you can no longer use your Apple ID on your Apple device. When an Apple ID is greyed out on an iPhone or iPad, it most likely is because of a problem that happened when upgrading the iOS or when you change your Apple ID and password.

Check Apple system status page
Apple has a webpage with real-time status information for its services, such as Apple ID. You can check if Apple ID services are working normally or experiencing issues. Here is how:
- Visit Apple’s system status site: https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/
- Look for “Apple ID”.
- If it is green, everything is working. if not, just wait, Apple will fix your issue.
Restart
Restarting your device may resolve your Apple ID problem. Here is how you can restart your device.
- iPhone X, 11 or later and Face ID iPad models: Press and hold the side and the volume up (or) down buttons together until you see the power off slider. Then drag the slider. Wait one minute and then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Other iPhone and iPad models and all iPod touch models: Press and hold the top or side button until the power off slider appears and then drag the slider. Wait one minute. Then press and hold the side or top button until you see the Apple logo.
Check your connections
It is possible that you may be having a connection problem. Please ensure that your iPhone or iPad is connected to the Internet. You may connect to the Internet using cellular service or Wi-Fi. Open Safari and try to load macreports.com, if you can not access our website, please try the tips below:
- On your device, turn on Airplane Mode and wait one minute and then turn it off (Settings > Airplane Mode).
- Restart your Wi-Fi router.
- Try a different Wi-Fi connection if possible.

- You can also want to reset your network settings by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Please note that doing so will erase all of your network settings such as your saved Wi-Fi passwords etc.
Check if restrictions are turned on on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
It is possible that Restrictions were enabled. Make sure that the ability to make changes to accounts is allowed. Here is how you can check this:

- On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, tap Settings.
- Tap Screen Time. You may need to enter your Screen Time passcode.
- Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Scroll down and find the Allow Changes section and tap Account Changes. Make sure that this setting is “Allow”.
- If this does not solve your issue, try turning off Screen Time. You can do so by going to Settings > Screen Time. Then tap the red “Turn Off Screen Time” button.
Software update
Perform a software update to the affected device. You can do so by going to Settings > General > Software Update. This will check for updates. If there is an update available, follow the onscreen instructions to update your iPhone or iPad.
You may also want to enable Automatic Updates by going to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.

You can also update your device using your computer by connecting your device to your computer.
Profiles
A configuration profile may have been installed on your iPhone or iPad (by employers or schools etc) that contains settings to restrict or limit and manage employees’ or student’s devices. On your device, go to Settings > General > Profiles, do you see any profile installed? if there is, you can tap it to see what restrictions are set. If you want, you may remove profiles by going to Settings > General > Profiles > Remove Profile or Delete Profile.
